History of the Firm

In 1983, Michael J. Howell left the Bank of Beaufort's Trust Department and became a partner in the law office of Lyman & Howell, P.A.  The firm Michael J. Howell, Attorney-at-Law, was opened in 1986, and was an offshoot of Lyman & Howell, P.A.  

From 1989 until 1992, Michael was with the law firm of Palmer, Brooks, Bowen & Howell, P.A., which became Palmer, Brooks & Howell, P.A. During this time Michael's practice became solely focused on Estate Planning and Probate Law.

In 1992, Michael re-opened his firm, Michael J. Howell, Attorney-at-Law in the Executive Center located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. 

In 2009, Margaret Howell Updegraff, Michael's daughter, began practicing law. She is the firm's Vice President and manages the firm's Probate and Trust Administration and Settlement Division. 

The firm has been in the Executive Center since 1992, although different units. The firm was renamed in 2000 to its current name: The Law Office of Michael J. Howell, P.A.
